FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 28, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana Campus Compact has awarded Indiana University Bloomington 28 AmeriCorps student positions in the Service-Engagement Corps (S-E Corps) for the 2010-2011 academic year.

Students chosen for the positions will serve 300 hours in community or national service and will receive $1,132 as educational funding. IU Bloomington staff members will provide training and supervision for the IU undergraduates selected as S-E Corps members by the three offices participating in the program.

The assignment of S-E Corps positions includes:

  • Eight members for the certificate program in Political and Civic Engagement (PACE)
  • Twelve members for the Student Activities Office
  • Eight members for the Global Village Living-Learning Center

PACE students take part in an issues forum with program director Michael Grossberg (left).

S-E Corps members with PACE, a unit in the College of Arts and Sciences, will conduct project-specific work with nonprofit agencies or government offices, either locally or nationally, according to community need and student interest.

PACE is collaborating with the Arts and Sciences Career Services Center, the Student Activities Office, the City of Bloomington Volunteer Network, and other campus offices to recruit, train and supervise students for the positions. Academic credit will be offered for mentored internship work. Interested students should contact Joelene Bergonzi, PACE associate director, at 812-856-1747 or pace@indiana.edu.

The Student Activities Office (SAO), a unit in the Division of Student Affairs, will use the S-E Corps position to extend leadership experiences for students interested in becoming more involved in the Bloomington community.

Students selected through an application process will work with SAO staff to identify a community organization that addresses a social issue of interest to the student. In addition to completing volunteer hours, the S-E Corps members will receive training and provide leadership for campus-wide events that promote service and volunteerism, including the Student Involvement Fair. The SAO supervisor for the S-E Corps positions is Colleen Rose, SAO assistant director, who can be reached at 812-855-4311 or acorps@indiana.edu.

Books & Beyond Workshop

IU senior Frances Friedl and Newark Collegiate Academy student Aaliyah Bowen work on their story for the Books & Beyond project at TEAM Academy in Newark, N.J.

The Global Village Living-Learning Center, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, is a residence hall community serving 160 Indiana University students interested in learning languages and cultures, travel and study abroad.

Five S-E Corps members will be part of a new initiative as Global Village Engagement Coordinators. They will develop workshops, presentations and service projects focused on environmental, cultural, political and social issues, with the goal of increasing awareness of current issues, connecting students to campus and community resources, and engaging students in creating positive community change.

Three Global Village S-E Corps members will serve as team leaders for Books and Beyond, a partnership with TEAM Schools in Newark, N.J., and a primary school in Rwanda to increase access to education through literacy education. As team leaders, the members will recruit student volunteers, build partnerships with campus organizations, organize volunteer workshops and facilitate small workgroups.

The supervisor for the Global Village S-E Corps members is Lauren Caldarera, assistant director, and she can be reached at 812-855-4264 or lcaldare@indiana.edu.
