School of Public and Environmental Affairs to host 9th District candidate debate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 6, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs will host a debate on Oct. 18 between the three candidates on the ballot for Indiana's 9th District congressional seat: Democratic Rep. Baron Hill, Republican Todd Young and Libertarian Greg Knott.

The debate will take place at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. in downtown Bloomington, at a time to be announced later.

"By sponsoring this debate, SPEA aims to help voters in the 9th district learn more about the issues at stake -- and the views of the candidates about them -- in what many people believe will be one of the most important congressional elections in our history," said John D. Graham, dean of SPEA. "This race is a potential bellwether that predicts if the Democrats will keep control of the House this year and a harbinger of the 2012 presidential race."

Incoming SPEA lecturer Brian DeLong will serve as moderator for the event. DeLong brings 11 years of policy debate experience to SPEA, including coaching two national championship collegiate debate teams. He has taught classes in public speaking, rhetoric and society, and debate, as well as techniques of public speaking and concepts in general speech analysis and presidential rhetoric.

SPEA is a world leader in public affairs and the environmental sciences and is the largest school of public affairs in the nation. In the most recent U.S. News & World Report rankings of America's best graduate schools, SPEA remained tied for second with the Kennedy School at Harvard University. In addition, the school also placed six specialty programs on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses in the top 10.

SPEA faculty, which includes a 2009 Nobel Prize winner, is world renowned for research in areas such as government finance, non-profit management, economic development, and environmental policy.
