IUPD's Keith Cash receives the Trevor R. Brown Award

May 16, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Chief of Police Keith Cash of the Indiana University Police Department in Bloomington has been selected as the recipient of the 2011 Trevor R. Brown Award. The honor is given annually by IU student media to a member of the IU or Bloomington community who believes in student journalists, serves as an advocate of the First Amendment, and who contributes to the valuable experience of student journalists and the long-term success of student media at Indiana University.

"It was an unexpected honor to receive the Trevor R. Brown award as it is given by students," said Cash. "I was especially moved that I was following such prestigious past recipients as Athletic Director Fred Glass, Dean of Students Dick McKaig and Chancellor Ken Gros Louis."

The award was presented to Cash by Trevor R. Brown, long-time dean of the IU School of Journalism for whom the award is named, on May 1 at the IU Bloomington Senior Goodbye ceremony.

Nominations for the award are submitted annually by the news staffs of IU's student media publications, the Arbutus, INside and the Indiana Daily Student.

According to the nomination supporting Chief of Police Cash, he has been "helpful to the reporters and editors at the Indiana Daily Student since he became interim Chief of Police in July 2010. In September, he helped the staff gather information about all pedestrian and bicycle accidents involving motor vehicles, and he did so in a short amount of time.

"He then became the official Chief of Police in October, and he continued to work with our IUPD beat reporter and anyone else who needed to speak with him for a story," the nomination read. "Specifically, he was a useful source for our stories regarding the antisemitic attacks in the fall. This spring, the staff at the IDS has reported on three student deaths, and Cash has been helpful and available for comment for every story along the way. He responds to us quickly, and he is always willing to help. We truly appreciate all of the work he has done for us, which is why we believe he deserves this award."

The award is named in honor of the long-time dean of the School of Journalism Trevor R. Brown. Brown was also the first recipient of the honor. Past winners of the Trevor R. Brown Award include IDS publisher David Adams, former Dean of Students Richard McKaig, Athletic Director Fred Glass and University Chancellor Ken Gros Louis.
