Update: IU monitoring student's situation in Egypt, in close contact with State Department officials

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University continues to closely monitor the situation involving one of its students, Luke Gates, who was detained Monday in Cairo, Egypt.
Egyptian authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. IU officials are maintaining regular contact with U.S. State Department personnel who are actively engaged with appropriate local authorities in assisting and ensuring the safety of Gates and the other two non-IU students who have been detained. The university also continues to be in close contact with officials at the American University in Cairo, Gates' family, the families of two other IU students who are currently studying in Egypt and Indiana's congressional delegation.

Officials confirm that one of three American students detained in Cairo is from IU

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University officials have confirmed that one of its students, Luke Gates, who is enrolled in the American University in Cairo, has been detained in Cairo, Egypt.
IU issued the following statement regarding the situation:
Indiana University expresses its deep concern for the safety of Luke Gates, as well as for the safety of the other two students who have been detained in Egypt. IU officials are in close contact with Gates' family as well as U.S. embassy officials and personnel of the American University in Cairo. U.S. embassy officials are actively engaged with appropriate Egyptian officials to assist the student. IU has two other students in Egypt who are not involved in this situation. IU has been in contact with these students, and we are working to ensure their continued safety. IU will continue to follow this situation very closely.
Gates, a junior who is double majoring in political science and Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, is enrolled in a semester-long program at the American University in Cairo. Through its Office of Overseas Study, IU facilitates access for interested IU students to the American University in Cairo, which is a direct enrollment program.
