Indiana University begins search for new Vice President- General Counsel

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University today, Dec. 27, announced that it has begun a search for the university's next vice president and general counsel, succeeding Dorothy Frapwell, who will become special advisor to the new general counsel.

Frapwell, who joined IU's legal staff in 1975, became the university's top legal counsel in 1994. Her role was elevated to Vice President and General Counsel in 2006.

"Dottie has provided exemplary service to Indiana University for more than 30 years, and I am deeply grateful that she has agreed to continue her service to IU as special advisor to the next vice president and general counsel," said Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie. "Indiana University has benefited greatly from her wise counsel, and will continue to do so in her new role."

The vice president and general counsel serves as the chief legal officer of Indiana University and is a member of the president's cabinet. In addition to representing or directing representation of the university in all legal matters, the general counsel serves as legal advisor to the IU Board of Trustees, the president and other senior administrators.

The university has formed a 10-member committee, chaired by John Applegate, Executive Vice President for University Regional Affairs, Planning, and Policy, to lead the search for a new vice president and general counsel. Other committee members are:

MaryFrances McCourt, Associate Vice President and University Treasurer

Patrick Shoulders, Vice Chair, Indiana University Board of Trustees; Partner, Ziemer Stayman Weitzel & Shoulders

Jennifer Kincaid, Chief of Staff and Director of Policy Administration, Office of the Executive Vice President for University Regional Affairs, Planning, and Policy, will serve as the committee staff.

IU's office of the Vice President and General Counsel is based in Bloomington, with a second office in Indianapolis, and serves all IU campuses. The office currently employs six full-time attorneys, in addition to legal interns and administrative office staff.

The committee will begin reviewing candidates on Feb. 1, 2012 and the new vice president and general counsel is expected to start no later than July 1, 2012.
