BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Famous culinary masters Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert will entertain audiences through comedic and oftentimes argumentative rapport in "Good vs. Evil: An Evening With Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at IU Auditorium.
Anthony Bourdain is perhaps best known for his Travel Channel series, "Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations," which won an Emmy Award in 2009 for Outstanding Cinematography for Nonfiction Programming. The series features Bourdain's brash humor as he travels around the globe trying anything from Irish stew in the United Kingdom to the rectum of a warthog in Namibia. Bourdain also wrote the book "Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly" and hosted the Food Network show "A Cook's Tour."
Eric Ripert, famous for his seafood dishes, is the chef and co-owner of Le Bernardin restaurant in New York. Le Bernardin ranks No. 15 on the S. Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants list, has maintained a four-star rating from The New York Times for over two decades, holds three stars from Michelin Guide and has a "29" food rating from the 2011 Zagat Guide. Ripert also hosts the Emmy Award-winning PBS TV series "Avec Eric," has written several cookbooks and is chair of City Harvest's Food Council, a New York-based food rescue organization.
The two men may have a lot of experience and expertise in the food industry, but they often have widely varying opinions on nearly any topic they discuss. When asked to comment on fast food and restaurant chains in the United States in a recent interview, Bourdain enthusiastically said, "Fast food exists all over the world that's much cheaper than what we call fast food, fresher, actually nutritious, and you're feeding money to individually owned mom-and-pop outfits more often than not. Even the chains can be good, or a hell of a lot better than here." Ripert's softer response was, "The Cheesecake Factory's not that bad."
From topics on food trends to sports teams, Bourdain and Ripert complement each other in an engaging and humorous interview that only two buddies with diversified views could host. The two chefs will elaborate on current events and past experiences and conduct a question-and-answer session with members of the audience.
"Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert's unique understanding of the intriguing world of a master chef combined with their culinary expertise of cultures from around the globe gives them an unparalleled perspective on the art of cooking," IU Auditorium director Doug Booher said. "Bourdain's bold sarcasm, controversial opinions and extraordinary stories paired with Ripert's culinary sophistication guarantee an entertaining show!"
