BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show 2012 will open Friday, May 18, in the Grunwald Gallery of Art at Indiana University Bloomington. The annual exhibit, which runs through July 21, features works by artists from across U.S. and Canada.
The Kinsey Institute will have an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at Morrison Hall, followed by a panel discussion with the artists from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
This contemporary art exhibition includes paintings, prints, photographs, ceramics, wearable art, metalwork, sculpture, fiber art and video installations by a mix of local, national and international artists. The artworks explore themes related to sex, gender, eroticism, reproduction, sexuality, romantic relationships, the politics of sex and gender, and the human figure.
The jurors for the 2012 competition were Louise Lippincott, chief curator at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh; Betsy Stirratt, director of the Grunwald Gallery; and Catherine Johnson-Roehr, curator of art, artifacts and photographs at The Kinsey Institute.
"Although there are a growing number of erotic art shows across the country, the Kinsey Institute exhibition is unique in that the artworks may be explicitly sexual, or they may address issues of gender and reproduction, all subjects that are associated with the institute's research program and collections," Johnson-Roehr said.
Two awards will be given to artists in the exhibit: a $300 cash prize for "Best in Show," selected by the jurors, and a $200 award for "Gallery Visitors Choice," which will be voted on by visitors during the opening reception. At least 20 of the featured artists are expected at the opening and Saturday's panel discussion.
The Kinsey Institute Juried Art Show 2012 is part of the Summer Festival of the Arts, a 113-day event in Bloomington that features visual arts, music, cinema, dance and theater on the Indiana University campus.
The Grunwald Gallery is open from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday. All events are free and open to the public.
The Kinsey Institute receives support from the Office of the Vice Provost for Research at IU Bloomington, which is dedicated to supporting ongoing faculty research and creative activity and developing new multidisciplinary initiatives to enhance opportunities for federal, state and private research funding.
