School of Continuing Studies at a glance

Here are some select statistics that help describe the productive history of Indiana University's School of Continuing Studies and its partnering campus Divisions of Continuing Studies.

Four academic degrees offered through online and correspondence courses, taken by students in the United States and abroad:

  • A master of science degree in adult education
  • A bachelor of arts degree in general studies -- IU was the first institution of higher learning in the state of Indiana to offer a bachelor's degree online
  • An associate of arts degree in general studies
  • An accredited high school diploma through the Indiana University high school diploma program

More than 195 undergraduate independent study courses, with 59 of them offering an online option.

More than 100 independent study high school courses -- 36 of these courses offer an online option

4,000 students actively pursuing a general studies degree

1,200 students actively pursing an Indiana University high school diploma

10,871 students enrolled in undergraduate independent study courses between July 2004 and April.

3,402 students enrolled in high school independent study courses during the same period

1,443 students graduated from the School of Continuing Studies and campus division degree programs in the 2003-04 school year

The campus divisions offer a variety of non-credit programs. Here is a sampling:

Indiana University South Bend Division of Extended Learning, 2004-05 fiscal year:

  • 703 organizations sent people to our programs
  • Twelve certificate programs offered on such topics as Using MS Office, Paralegal Studies, Human Resources Practitioner and Not-for-Profit Leadership
  • 340 classes offered
  • 3,261 students registered

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Community Learning Network, 2004-05 fiscal year:

  • Fifteen organizations served
  • Eighteen certificate programs offered on such topics as clinical research, legal nurse consultant, basic Web design and the professional floral industry
  • 983 classes offered
  • 10,693 students registered

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Division of Continuing Studies, 2004-05 fiscal year:

  • 249 organizations and companies sent employees to public and contract training programs
  • 22 companies contracted for customized programs in supervisory leadership, negotiation skills, cultural diversity, lean manufacturing, business writing and communication, Spanish and more
  • 85 certificate programs offered on such topics as Land Title Services, Workplace Safety, Quality, Paralegal Training and Medical Transcription
  • 7,000 students registered

Organizations served span the state and include public and private sector corporations.
