Bloomington Multicultural Festival to be held Oct. 1

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University will join the City of Bloomington and Ivy Tech Community College in celebrating the city's increasing ethnic diversity during the 2006 Bloomington Multicultural Festival.
The annual festival will be held on Sunday, Oct. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at City Hall's Showers Plaza, which is located at 401 N. Morton St. Should it rain, all activities will be conducted inside City Hall.
"The festival began as an effort to help showcase for the campus and the community the rich cultural traditions that are present here," said Richard McKaig, vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at IU Bloomington. "This program has expanded each year, highlighting the significance that it plays in the community. The festival is a great addition to the fall activities in Bloomington."
The Bloomington Multicultural Festival will celebrate -- with entertainment, food and activities -- the city's cultural expression and diversity. A myriad of cultural organizations, performers and musicians representative of Bloomington will participate in the festival and promote an appreciation and respect for the value and strength of a diverse community.
"Our community is full of Bloomington citizens and visitors who come from all walks of life," said Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan. "The Multicultural Festival provides an opportunity for residents and visitors to interact and learn more about the diverse cultures that give Bloomington its unique style and character. What an excellent way to launch the celebration of 'Be Diverse Bloomington' month."
The festival will feature a varied lineup of musicians, dancers and performers, and also include a children's activity area with fun and educational opportunities for kids to explore diversity.
Sponsors of the 2006 Bloomington Multicultural Festival include IU, the City of Bloomington, Ivy Tech Community College, the Monroe County Community School Corporation and Monroe County Government.
