IU professor to receive international honor for sexuality research

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- William Yarber, a professor in applied health science at Indiana University and senior director of the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention at the IU School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, has been selected to receive the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality.

Yarber will receive the national honor at the society's 44th annual meeting in Montreal on Nov. 9. IU has more recipients (five) of the honor than any other university, which Yarber said reflects the respect of the university as a worldwide leader in the scientific study of sexuality. The internationally recognized Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender and Reproduction is located at IU, and Yarber is a research fellow with the institute.

The society award is presented for "outstanding contributions to the field of sexology in the areas of research, education and therapy." Yarber, a health educator for nearly 30 years, is being honored for his research work in adolescent and rural HIV/STD behavior. The center he has directed for eight years is the nation's oldest and only research program exclusively focusing on AIDS prevention in rural areas.

The society was founded in 1957 as an international organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about sexuality and is the oldest organization of professionals interested in the study of sexuality in the United States. With more than 900 members, the society supports the study of sexuality as a valid area for research by the scientific community.

In addition to the society honor, Yarber recently received the American School Health Association Research Council Award for his research in adolescent sexuality.
