Five-year accreditation, praise for IU School of Education

The School of Education at Indiana University has been accredited for the maximum five-year period by the Unit Accreditation Board of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The accreditation for all the professional education offerings at the school is for both the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses.

NCATE President Arthur Wise congratulated the school "for displaying the high quality necessary to be granted national accreditation" and said "special congratulations are in order because the United Accreditation Board cited no official areas for improvement relative to any of the standards."

Strengths of the school that were praised by NCATE included the high quality of the faculty and its production of scholarly works, along with the availability of sophisticated computer technology for the students.

Factors that help determine accreditation include the subject matter knowledge by the students, administrative partnerships with schools to allow teacher candidates to develop the necessary skills for success and commitment to work with diverse student populations.

Gerardo Gonzalez, university dean of the School of Education, said, "Accreditation means that the IU School of Education has been recognized by the profession for its excellence and commitment to quality teacher preparation. We take great pride in preparing knowledgeable educators who demonstrate the skills needed for successful entry into their chosen field."

He praised the school faculty and staff for meeting the NCATE standards and those required by the Indiana Professional Standards Board.

The IU School of Education is consistently ranked among the best in the nation. In the recent US News & World Report graduate school findings, it was ranked 17th overall, with six specialty programs in the nation's top 10.
