BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- Sarah Loos, a student in the Indiana University School of Informatics, was named as a finalist for the Computing Research Association's (CRA) 2009 Outstanding Female Undergraduate Award.

Loos was one of 22 women cited. As a finalist, she is one of the top seven females in this highly competitive selection process.

Each year, the CRA honors undergraduates who have excelled in their field. The CRA is an organization of more than 200 North American academic departments of computer science, computer engineering and related fields; laboratories and centers in industry, government and academia engaging in basic computing research; and affiliated professional societies.

Loos is a senior with a dual major in computer science and mathematics. She received third place in the student research competition at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference in October 2008. IU has also nominated her to apply for a Churchill Scholarship -- given to only 13 American students nationwide -- to pursue graduate study at Cambridge University. The recipients of that scholarship will be notified in January 2009.

"Sarah is an exceptional student, and a fine representative for the School of Informatics," said computer science Chair Andy Hanson. "To be named a finalist for this CRA award is quite an honor. She's in company with other students who are the 'best of the best.'"

The 2009 CRA competition was sponsored by Microsoft Research. Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs and Microsoft Research were sponsors in alternate years.
