BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will host a free performance by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in the Musical Arts Center on the Bloomington campus.

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by its newly appointed music director, Krzysztof Urbanski.

Conducted by newly appointed music director Krzysztof Urbanski, the concert will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Russian composer Igor Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring." Audiences will also have the chance to hear a reworked version of the Brahms Violin Concerto, arranged for piano and orchestra by piano soloist Dejan Lazic.

The free concert is a general admission event, and no tickets are required to attend.

"I'm delighted that the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will once again head south to the IU Bloomington campus to present a program led by our music director, Krzysztof Urbanski, and guest soloist Dejan Lazic," said Gary Ginstling, the orchestra's new CEO. "IU pride runs deep within our organization, as 20 of our very own musicians hold degrees from the Jacobs School of Music at IU. The ISO greatly values its association with the Jacobs School, and we see this concert as an opportunity to reconnect with its faculty, students and the general Bloomington community."

"The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is thrilled to host the inaugural Bloomington concert of the ISO's new music director, Krzysztof Urbanski, and its newly appointed president and CEO, Gary Ginstling," Dean Gwyn Richards said. "It is always an event when the orchestra comes to IU, giving the community, our students and our faculty the opportunity to hear them in person and to interact with them. It is so generous of them to fit such a concert into their crowded schedule and to share so freely of their gifts."

Krzysztof Urbanski
September 2012 marked the start of Urbanski's second season as music director of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He continues as chief conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, which also appointed him artistic leader in recognition of the major contribution he has already made to the orchestra. From April 2013, Urbanski will take up the position of principal guest conductor of Tokyo Symphony Orchestra.

Upcoming debuts include concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Wiener Symphoniker, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Orches-tre Philharmonique de Radio France, Washington's National Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic. He will also conduct two major European tours this year, with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and the European Union Youth Orchestra.

Polish repertoire plays an important part in Urbanski's programming. He made his debut at the 2010 Grant Park Festival in Chicago, and conducted Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki's "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima"with NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg in 2010. He has also been invited to take part in the birthday celebrations for Penderecki in November 2013 and to open the 2014 Beethoven Easter Festival.

Urbanski graduated from the Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw in 2007 and, in the same year, was the unanimous first prize winner of the Prague Spring International Conducting Competition. He has conducted all the major Polish orchestras, and served as assistant conductor to the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra from 2007 to 2009. He is adjunct professor of music in orchestral conducting at the Jacobs School of Music.

Dejan Lazic
Lazic has appeared with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, Bamberger Symphoniker, Danish National, Helsinki Philharmonic, NHK Symphony, Sapporo Symphony, Seoul and Hong Kong Philharmonics and worked with conductors Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kirill Petrenko, Robert Spano, John Storgårds, Krzysztof Urbanski and Osmo Vänskä.

In 2012-2013, Lazic will be artist-in-residence with Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, and appears with the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the Copenhagen Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra Taipei and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

He has released a dozen critically acclaimed recordings with Channel Classics and is also active as a composer. His works include piano compositions, chamber music and orchestral works, as well as cadenzas for Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven piano concertos. He is currently working on his own Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1.

Born in Zagreb, Croatia, Lazic grew up in Salzburg, Austria, where he studied at the Mozarteum. He now lives in Amsterdam.
