IU School of Fine Arts presents annual thesis shows

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Starting March 24, Indiana University's School of Fine Arts (SoFA) Gallery and the IU Art Museum will present a full schedule of master's thesis shows featuring works created by graduating master of fine arts students, as well as the annual bachelor of fine arts thesis shows and bachelor of arts senior show. All events are free and open to the public.
Students exhibiting in the SoFA Gallery will give gallery talks about their work at noon on the Friday of their opening receptions, while students exhibiting in the IU Art Museum will speak about their work during the first part of their opening receptions, beginning at 6 p.m. An opening reception will accompany each exhibition, from 7 to 9 p.m., on the Friday after it opens to the public. Students help plan the exhibits and install their artwork.
MFA 1-A, a preliminary exhibition to the Master of Fine Arts Thesis shows, will be on display from March 24-28 at the SoFA Gallery. It features thesis work by Aaron Higgins, a digital art student, who will give a gallery talk at noon, Friday, March 27. The opening reception also will be March 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the SoFA Gallery.
The first set of MFA thesis shows, MFA I, will be on display at the SoFA Gallery from March 31-April 11, and at the IU Art Museum, from April 1-April 12. The SoFA Gallery will exhibit works by Dora Rosenbaum (printmaking), Derek Parker (sculpture), Julian Hensarling (printmaking), Rebecca Drolen (photography), Karrie Maxwell (painting), Brian Kelley (painting).The IU Art Museum will exhibit Jonathan Dankenbring (sculpture), Kelly Jordan (painting), Aron Wehr (painting), Jiangmei Wu (graphic design). Opening receptions will be held at each venue, on Friday, April 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the IU Art Museum and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the SoFA Gallery.
MFA 2 will be on exhibit at the SoFA Gallery from April 14-25 and at the IU Art Museum from April 15-26. The SoFA Gallery will highlight works created by Anne Rocklein (sculpture), Vida Sacic (graphic design), John Berry (painting), David Rowe (ceramics), Joshua Brennan (printmaking), Allyson Smith (painting) and Bryeanne Summers (graphic design). The IU Art Museum will exhibit works by Kevin Neil Gardner (painting), Rachel Bleil (ceramics), Sonia Lea (painting) and Joseph Holsapple (painting). Opening receptions will be held at each venue on Friday, April 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the IU Art Museum and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the SoFA Gallery.
MFA 3 will be on exhibit at the SoFA Gallery from April 28-May 9 and at the IU Art Museum from April 29-May 10. The SoFA Gallery will exhibit works by Nathan Etchison (ceramics), Nate Kuznia (printmaking), Carrie Longley (ceramics), Lisa Johnson (metalsmithing), Lee Busick (printmaking), Ying-Fang Shen (digital) and Alexis Cluver (photography). The IU Art Museum will exhibit works by Ryan Irvin (graphic design), Todd Munson (painting), Dave Harper (graphic design) and LaRinda Meinburg (sculpture). Opening receptions will be held at each venue on Friday, May 1 from 6to 8 p.m. at the IU Art Museum and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the SoFA Gallery.
In addition, artwork created by graduating bachelor of fine arts students from all studio areas will be featured from March 24-May 9. Student shows give advanced fine arts students opportunities to participate in exhibition planning and installing their artwork.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts Painting Show will be on display from March 24-28 and will feature works from the BFA painting program. An opening reception will be Friday, March 27, 7 to 9 p.m.
The first BFA thesis show, BFA 1, will be on display in the SoFA Gallery from March 31-April 4. Exhibiting BFA students include Derek Springston (graphic design), Daniel Weddle (sculpture), Sharon Beach (textiles) and Molly Poganski (graphic design). An opening reception will be Friday, April 3, from 7 to 9 p.m.
BFA 2 will run from April 7-April 11. Works created by Trevor Gerring (graphic design), Laura Brockman (graphic design), Darron Salzer (printmaking) and Mary Elizabeth Miller (sculpture). An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 10, from 7 to 9 p.m.
BFA 3, which will be on display from April 14-April 18, will feature works by created by Brandie Roberts (ceramics), Ellie Schreiner (photography), Brian J. Stutsman (ceramics), Christy Harrison (printmaking) and Laura Brubaker (metalsmithing). An opening reception will be Friday, April 17, from 7 to 9 p.m.
BFA 4, which will be on display April 21 - April 25, will highlight works created by Ryu-Hee Kim (metalsmithing), Catherine Hooker (photography), Rachel Bateman (ceramics), Joseph Rohrer (sculpture) and Ben Tousley (graphic design). An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 24, 7 to 9 p.m.
BFA 5, which will be on display April 28-May 2, will highlight works created by Freddy Jarvik (ceramics), Conner Green (photography), Soo Kyung Lee (photography) and Lacy Kelly (graphic design). An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 1, from 7 to 9 p.m.
The annual BA Senior Show will feature works created by IU Fine Arts students from the bachelor of art program. Works in a variety of media will be on display from May 5-9. Bachelor of art students receive a broad-based liberal arts degree with required courses inside and outside of the School of Fine Arts. An opening reception will be Friday, May 8 from 7 to 9 p.m.
