BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Jay Kincaid, senior director at Indiana University Radio/Television Services, has received an Emmy Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The award, for work directing portions of the Beijing Olympics, was presented last Wednesday (April 29) at the 30th Annual Sports Emmy Awards at a special ceremony in Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. He was a winner in the Outstanding Live Event Turnaround category.
Kincaid, who regularly directs "The Friday Zone" and "The Weekly Special for WTIU," marked his 10th Emmy win with this award. He worked previously for King World Productions, NBA Entertainment and CNBC.
"Jay has directed all stripes of sporting events around the world," said Perry Metz, executive director of Radion/Television Services. "Our viewers benefit from that experience every time he produces a regional documentary or directs one of our programs."
Often, Kincaid has been able to arrange for a student or a staff member to join him in working at the Olympics. Those people, in turn, bring new perspectives back to their work at the station. Kincaid also conceived the idea of the Sony Alliance, a cooperative venture between IU and Sony to improve research contacts, infrastructure, student opportunities, equipment pricing and job placement.
Emmys were presented by media notables, including sports broadcasters James Brown, Cris Collinsworth and Jim Nantz. There were winners in 32 categories, including outstanding live sports special, sports documentary and studio show. The Sports Emmy Award recipients were chosen by a blue ribbon panel of their peers from more than 750 entries. The awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast throughout the 2008 calendar year.
With nine Sports Emmys, NBC won the most of any network, including Outstanding Live Event Turnaround for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.
