'Amazing biotech student' found footing on small campus

When Corey White was deciding where to attend college, IU East stood out for its small class sizes, 15-minute proximity to home -- and the warm welcome he received when visiting campus.
"Coming from a small high school, I felt at home in the IU East classrooms," he said. "A big deciding factor was that they made me feel wanted. Everyone just seemed more personal than at the other schools to which I applied."
After pursuing a few majors that included nursing and biology, White found his niche in biotechnology. After declaring his major, he worked as a lab assistant for science and physics classes, had the opportunity to conduct his own lab research and was honored with the "Amazing Student in Biotechnology" award for his graduating class.
While he felt fortunate to have many excellent professors and instructors at IU East, White said Dale Beach, assistant professor of biotechnology, stood out as a great support in the classroom and the lab.
"Dr. Beach also has been a great resource for helping me prepare for my future after graduation," said White, who plans to take the GRE this year after taking some time off ("I guess I'm still not sure what I want to be when I grow up," he joked).
White has gained the skills and confidence to take on whatever comes next. "IU East has definitely given me an improved ability to be resourceful and to problem-solve."
