IU releases 2003-04 enrollment figures
Indiana University enrollment for fall 2003-04 reached record levels, eclipsing last year's marks for total number of students and total credit hours taken.
Enrollment figures released today (Sept. 17) show 99,164 students enrolled in 1,119,493 credit hours at IU's eight campuses. That is a 0.5 percent increase in enrollment and a 1.6 percent increase in credit hours taken over levels a year ago.
"These record enrollments are, in part, a reflection of the academic reputation of Indiana University and the quality of this institution," said IU president Adam W. Herbert. "Students have choices, and again this year more and more students are pursuing their education at Indiana University. They understand the value of an IU degree."
IU campuses in Indianapolis and Richmond set all-time records for enrollment and credit hours. At Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, total enrollment increased by 835 to 29,860 students, a 2.9 percent increase, and credit hours taken increased by 12,177 (296,193 to 308,370), a 4.1 percent increase. At IU East, enrollment increased by 87 to 2,568 students, a 3.5 percent increase, and credit hours taken increased by 1,016 (23,189 to 24,205), a 4.4 percent increase.
Enrollment on the Bloomington campus decreased by 314 students to 38,589, a 0.8 percent change, but for the fifth straight year, the campus set a record for credit hours enrolled. Credit hours taken increased from 517,153 to 518,991 at the Bloomington campus.
On the Bloomington and IUPUI campuses, non-resident enrollments increased. In Bloomington, the number of non-resident students increased by 453 students (3 percent); at IUPUI, non-resident enrollment increased by 332 students (18 percent).
Enrollment and credit hours taken at two IU campuses, Kokomo and Northwest, showed the highest percentage increases. Kokomo enrollment increased from 2,772 in fall 2002-03 to 2,954 this fall, a 6.6 percent change. At Northwest, enrollment increased from 4,893 a year ago to 5,097 for fall 2003-04, a 4.2 increase. The number of credit hours taken at Kokomo increased 7.9 percent over last year's levels (25,828 to 27,860); at Northwest, the increase was 4.9 percent (45,373 to 47,612).
"In the context of a knowledge-based global economy, increasing enrollment trends bode well for the future of Indiana and help ensure that our state will remain competitive and economically viable," Herbert said.
In South Bend, enrollment decreased slightly from 7,457 in fall 2002-03 to 7,280 this year. Credit hours taken, however, increased by 252 to 67,721.
After setting enrollment records in each of the previous four years, enrollment at IU Southeast decreased from 6,716 to 6,408, a 4.6 percent decline. Credit hours taken also decreased from 62,621 to 60,764.
At Fort Wayne, IU enrollment declined by 55 students from 6,463 to 6,408, a 0.9 percent decline. Total credit hours taken increased slightly from 63,834 to 63,969, which is an all-time record.
