Ivy Tech chancellor to be honored at La Casa 30th anniversary celebration at IUB
Guadalupe Valtierra, Region One chancellor at Ivy Tech State College, will receive the first Distinguished Latino Alumni Award at Indiana University Bloomington on Saturday (Sept. 27) during the 30th anniversary celebration of La Casa.
The Distinguished Latino Alumni Award is presented to Latino alumni who have contributed to the IU community, their hometown community or their state, and have been outstanding in their career field.
"From community service to his professional life and dedication to educating all citizens, no other alumnus could be more worthy to be recognized as Indiana University's first Distinguished Latino Alumni Award recipient," said Gerardo Gonzalez, professor and dean of the IU School of Education.
Valtierra has had a long career in the field of education. Prior to his position as chancellor, he was a regional dean of student and academic affairs at Ivy Tech State College. He also held positions at Purdue University Calumet in the Upward Bound program, and he has held several positions at Indiana University.
Valtierra received his bachelor of arts degree in social studies from Purdue University in 1979. He went on to receive a law degree and a master's degree in higher education from IU Bloomington in 1982 and 1984, respectively.
