"Sweet Home Indiana" is theme for this year's Homecoming at IUB on Oct. 9-11

NOTE: Information about street closings for the Homecoming parade is provided at the bottom of this release.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University alumni will gather in "Sweet Home Indiana" as they celebrate Homecoming 2003 next weekend (Oct. 9-11).

Festivities will begin Thursday (Oct. 9) with "Yell Like Hell," a student spirit competition, and get into high gear with the 45th annual Homecoming Parade on Oct. 10.

IU President Adam Herbert and his wife, Karen, will serve as grand marshals for the parade. The parade will form on Rose Avenue next to Willkie Quad, between Third and Seventh streets, and begin at 5:30 p.m. Turning right onto East Third Street, it will advance to Indiana Avenue and end at the Sample Gates.

A pep rally will follow the parade at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Sample Gates at the corner of Indiana and Kirkwood avenues. Herbert will be joined by the IU team captains, the cheerleaders and pom squad, the RedSteppers and the Marching Hundred to prepare fans for the Oct. 11 football game, when the Hoosiers will square off against Northwestern University at 11:10 a.m. in Memorial Stadium. A bonfire in Dunn Meadow will follow the pep rally.

During pre-game and halftime ceremonies Saturday, the 2003 homecoming king and queen will be introduced and winners of the float and window-painting contests will be announced. The Marching Hundred alumni band and alumnae RedSteppers will perform, and the 50-year I-Men will be honored.

Tickets for the game can be purchased through the IU Athletics ticket office. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 812-855-4006 or 866-IUSPORT (866-487-7678).

Alumni and friends also are invited to the 16th annual Homecoming Brunch on Oct. 11 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at the John Mellencamp Pavilion next to Memorial Stadium. Entertainment will be provided. Tickets for the brunch, at $12 for adults and $6 for children age 12 and under, are available by calling the IU Alumni Association at 800-824-3044. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door.

Also on Oct. 11, from 9 to 11 a.m., there will be an open house for all alumni and friends of IU at the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center, 1000 E. 17th St., across the street from Assembly Hall. Refreshments will be provided.

The annual Homecoming Show on Oct. 11 features comedian Jerry Seinfeld in two performances at the IU Auditorium. The first show is sold out, but tickets at all price levels are available for the second show, which will start at 9:30 p.m. Call the IU Auditorium at 812-855-1103 for ticket information.

Student groups will get into the Homecoming spirit at the "Yell Like Hell" spirit competition on Thursday (Oct. 9) starting at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union. "Yell Like Hell," sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, offers students a jump-start on showing their spirit for Homecoming weekend. Participating groups prepare three-minute acts such as skits, dance routines, musical numbers and lip-syncing. The act with the most Homecoming spirit will be declared the winner.

Three special acts will join the student groups to add to the excitement: the popular a cappella performers Straight No Chaser and Ladies First and the nationally recognized IU Pom Squad. Admission is free to "Yell Like Hell," and the general public is invited to watch. For more information on Yell Like Hell, contact the Student Alumni Association at 812- 855-SAA1 (812-855-7221).

The IU Alumni Association serves the university and its more than 450,000 living graduates through programs, services and communications.
