Heil to join IU Foundation as senior vice president for development

BLOOMINGTON -- Indiana University Foundation President Gene Tempel announced today that Marsha (Marti) Heil will join the Foundation as senior vice president for development on Oct. 1. Heil was selected after a nationwide search.
"Marti is a well-known and respected leader in higher education development with more than 30 years of fundraising and management experience," said Tempel. "Marti is an excellent fit for IU because of her experience at a Big Ten university, her recent successes with major fundraising campaigns, her extensive experience with and high level of understanding of strategic planning, and her day-to-day leadership and managerial style. She is truly a leader, a teacher and a mentor of development practices."
Heil is currently the associate vice president and chief operating officer for university development at Michigan State University. She oversees and directs all fundraising activities for the university, and she works directly with the deans and development officers who lead 30 separate fundraising programs university-wide.
IU President Michael A. McRobbie, who is also chairman of the Foundation's board of directors, said, "I am enormously pleased that Marti Heil will apply her talents and experience on behalf of Indiana University. She has an exemplary fundraising record and is known for her managerial excellence. We are confident that her well-honed leadership skills will take Indiana University and its development team to the next level in service to IU."
Heil began her career with the Capital Area United Way in Lansing, Mich., where her responsibilities included volunteer management, campaign planning, fundraising and communications.
At MSU, Heil has served in a wide variety of capacities, including planning and directing two comprehensive campaigns and a major campus campaign, which considerably surpassed their goals and doubled average yearly giving. She strengthened the relationship between alumni relations and development and served as the interim vice president for development during a time of strategic reorganization.
Prior to assuming university-wide responsibilities, she led constituent-based programs in MSU's College of Human Medicine and College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. She also held positions in annual, special and alumni giving programs and worked with MSU's student foundation board and programs.
In 2003, she was nominated by her peers for, and received, MSU's university-wide "Outstanding Supervisor Award" for her success in developing a collaborative culture and positive work environment. She is active in the Big Ten development community and served as a highly-regarded faculty member for the Big Ten Fundraisers Institute from 2003 through 2008.

The 14-member search committee included representatives of the IU Foundation board of directors and staff; IU chancellors, provost, deans and development officers from multiple campuses; alumni and donors, and the IU Alumni Association.
Heil is married to Bill Heil. They have two children, son Matt and daughter Mandee.
