Candidates for University Libraries dean position to visit Indiana University

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two candidates for the position of dean of university libraries at Indiana University will visit IU Bloomington and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis next week for campus interviews and meetings with librarians, faculty, staff and students.
The two are Brenda L. Johnson, dean of university libraries at the University of California, Santa Barbara; and Diane Parr Walker, deputy university librarian at the University of Virginia.

Schnabel is dean of the IU School of Informatics and interim vice president for research; Shaw is professor of library and information science.
Johnson will be at Indiana University Oct. 4-6 (Sunday through Tuesday). On Monday, Oct. 5, she will be at IU Bloomington, taking part in a campus-wide open meeting from 9-10:15 a.m. in the lobby of the Musical Arts Center and meeting with librarians and library staff from 4-5:15 p.m. in E174 of the Wells Library. On Tuesday, Oct. 6, she will be at IUPUI for an open meeting at 2 p.m. in University Library 1126.
Walker will be at Indiana University Oct. 7-9 (Wednesday through Friday). She will be at IU Bloomington Thursday, Oct. 8, taking part in a campus-wide open meeting from 9-10:15 a.m. in the lobby of the Musical Arts Center and meeting with librarians and library staff from 4-5:15 p.m. in E174 of the Wells Library. On Friday, Oct. 9, she will be at IUPUI for an open forum at 2 p.m. at the University Library Auditorium.
IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Karen Hanson initiated the dean search after Patricia Steele, the Ruth Lilly Dean of University Libraries, announced that she would retire. This fall, Steele accepted a position as dean of university libraries at the University of Maryland. Carolyn Walters, the executive associate dean of the libraries at IU Bloomington, was named interim dean of university libraries in August.
Johnson is responsible for the direction of University of California, Santa Barbara, Libraries, including intellectual leadership, administrative oversight and fundraising initiatives. The libraries have an annual budget of $18.5 million and a staff of about 250. She previously was employed at the University of Michigan University Library, where she served most recently as interim co-university librarian and associate university librarian for public services. Her degrees are from Muskingum College (B.A., history), State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law, and Rutgers University (MLS).
Walker has since 2003 been deputy university librarian at the University of Virginia, where her duties include guiding day-to-day operations for a University Library system of 13 locations, 230 faculty and staff members, and an operating budget of $26 million. She previously was University of Virginia associate university librarian for user services, coordinator for Humanities and Social Sciences Branch Libraries, and music librarian. She has a Bachelor of Music degree from MacMurray College, a Master of Music from the University of Iowa, and a Master of Science in of Library Science from the University of Illinois.
