IU Union Board, GLBT to sponsor traveling art exhibit titled ‘Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals’

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- "Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals, 1933-1945," a traveling art exhibit from The National Holocaust Museum, will be on display throughout the Indiana Memorial Union at Indiana University, Friday (Feb. 19) through April 25.
A free, open-to-the-public reception is scheduled for Feb. 22 from 4-6 p.m. in the IMU Gallery.
"Many people do not know about this aspect of the Holocaust -- that in addition to six million Jews who were exterminated, other groups of individuals, including gay men, were removed from society and persecuted for who they were," said Doug Bauder, coordinator for IU's GLBT Student Support Services. "Students could benefit from this exhibit by reflecting on the insidious nature of hatred which can lead to violence."
The exhibition has circulated to cities across the country. More than two years in development, it is the first major exhibition on the subject for English-speaking audiences and draws upon materials from more than 40 archives and other repositories in eight countries. The exhibit will comprise reproductions of more than 250 historic photographs and documents.
The mission statement of the 101st Union Board is centered global issues and educating students for personal growth. "I hope that this exhibit will get people talking about the issues that our society faces today," said AJ O'Reilly, Union Board's Canvas director. "This exhibit is unique because it has the capability of meaning something different to a broad variety of people."
Indiana Memorial Union Board
The Indiana Memorial Union Board is IU's largest student programming organization and also serves as the governing body of the Indiana Memorial Union.
