Merry music making for IU President Herbert
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University musicians are prepared to sing -- and play -- the praises of their newly inaugurated leader, President Adam W. Herbert.
"This is only the 17th president in 184 years," said Robin Roy Gress, secretary of the IU Board of Trustees. "It offers a great opportunity for the university community to come together."
Fittingly, the university community will come together with music, a cornerstone of academic and artistic excellence at IU for more than half a century. A number of events featuring IU School of Music faculty and staff and covering IU's wide range of musical mastery -- classical music, jazz, folk music and gospel -- will fill the air during the April 14 and 15 inaugural festivities.
Inaugural concert, Wednesday, April 14, 8:30 p.m.
IU Auditorium
- "All That Jazz!" -- Uniting President Herbert's present and past, IU School of Music Jazz Department Chair David Baker and University of North Florida Director of Jazz Studies Bunky Green will perform a free jazz concert. They will be joined by School of Music visiting faculty Bruce Bransby (bass), Luke Gillespie (piano) and Steve Houghton (drums).
Inaugural ceremony, Thursday, April 15, 3 p.m.
IU Auditorium
- Processionals "Phoenix Processional" by Dan Locklair, "Festal Flourish" by Gordon Jacob and "Fanfare" by Francis Jackson will be performed by IU Chancellor's Professor of Music Marilyn J. Keiser on the IU Auditorium's historic, recently refurbished organ. She will also play Locklair's "The People Respond, 'Amen!'" as a recessional.
- "Special Fanfare" by jazz composer and saxophonist John Schroeder will be performed by the Indiana University Herald Trumpeters: Thaddeus Archer, Brandon Craswell, Jamie Lantz, Joseph Morgan, Aaron Ritter and Brad Weil
- "The Star-Spangled Banner," by Francis Scott Key, will be performed by Distinguished Professor of Music and Metropolitan Opera baritone Timothy R. Noble
