IU Department of Theatre and Drama accepting applications for Midsummer Theatre Program

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Department of Theatre and Drama is accepting applications for its Midsummer Theatre Program, a two-week intensive theater training program for high school students.

The program begins Sunday, June 6, and runs through a final presentation on Saturday, June 19.

The Midsummer Theatre Program was launched in 1999 as a program for students from the Midwest. The academy has in recent years drawn students from around the country and the world. Students from as far away as Florida, Texas, Maryland, California, Georgia, Virginia, Tennessee, Colorado, Hawaii and even Japan have joined students from Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois.
This two-week program is a combination of theatrical training and personal development. Participants are exposed to the challenging art of theater and perform in theatrical works, all while enjoying campus life in the rich cultural environment of IU Bloomington.
The focus of this experiential program is on performance fundamentals: daily classes in acting, movement and voice are supplemented by extended special units in musical theater, television and dramatic literature.
Students are immersed in courses led by IU professors who are recognized as masters in their respective areas. Some of the department's graduate students serve as teachers and mentors both in and out of the classroom, placing a priority on individualized attention.
"The most important element to the success of the Midsummer Theatre Program is a sense of ensemble -- the spirit of support, encouragement and positive nurturing felt by each member of the group," said Dale McFadden, director of the program. "Students who possess a love of theater, a desire to create and respect for the process of collaboration thrive in this immersive environment."
