IUSA launches custom Zimride rideshare service

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 20, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Student Association (IUSA) announced today (April 20) the launching of their new Zimride rideshare service. The Zimride platform connects IU community members through an easy to use private network that will reduce campus traffic, parking difficulties, and provide substantial cost-savings for the community.

"We are excited to offer a program that will allow our community to easily find and share rides," said Ilya Rekhter, chief transportation officer for IUSA. "Zimride's solution is appealing to our students, faculty and staff, which will enable us to reduce congestion and make campus commuting more efficient for everyone."

"We are very pleased to assist IUSA in launching this new service for the Bloomington Campus. We've been looking at implementing this service on campus for some time, but IUSA just jumped in and made it happen," said Kent McDaniel, executive director of transportation services. "This has created yet another transportation demand management tool that will go hand-in-hand with our universal access on fixed route bus service, our existing car pool service, and the newly implemented Zipcar service."

Zimride has developed a custom rideshare solution to serve IU's Bloomington Campus population. Through Zimride's web-based interface, faculty, staff and students will be able to find others with similar commuting patterns or one-time rides. As a social network platform with optional Facebook integration, Zimride is fun to use and helps establish trust among users.

Starting today, all IU Bloomington students, faculty and staff can access the IU Zimride system for free at https://www.zimride.com/iub.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, driving personal vehicles contributes 20 percent of the country's overall C02 emissions. This establishment of Zimride in Bloomington marks a significant step in improving campus sustainability practices. Furthermore, ridesharing on daily commutes or on longer one-time trips substantially reduces the costs of travel in a community. This transportation alternative is a fun, easy and sustainable way to collectively make a difference.
