Yarber recognized by national association
William L. Yarber, a professor in the Department of Applied Health Science in Indiana University Bloomington's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, will receive the Professional Standard of Excellence Award from the American Association of Sex Educators, Therapists and Counselors (AASETC), May 15, at the association's annual conference. This award is given to a person who has exemplified intellectual, creative and ethical standards of excellence in the field of sexology. Also being honored at the meeting will be David Satcher, M.D., former U.S. Surgeon General, who will receive the AASECT Humanitarian Award.
Yarber, senior director of the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and senior research fellow at the Kinsey Institute, received the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality in 2002. Also a professor in IUB's Department of Gender Studies, Yarber is a nationally recognized expert on AIDS, and sexuality education and research in sexual risk behavior. At the request of the U.S. federal government, he authored the country's first comprehensive school AIDS prevention curriculum in 1987. He also chaired the National Guidelines Task Force in 1991 that developed the first guidelines for comprehensive sexuality education. Yarber has been consultant on school AIDS education for the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and has received $3 million in grants and contracts for his AIDS prevention work and research.
The award Yarber will receive next month is presented to a member and/or non-member of AASECT who has worked extensively to represent or advance the field of human sexuality through activities including, but not limited to, clinical programs or other original clinical contributions for development and implementation of sexuality education curriculum, scientific research, and art, print, radio, television or Internet media contributions. The recipient of this award will be an individual who is recognized by his/her peers as a competent and accomplished colleague, an expert in his/her field, and an exemplary bearer of the standards of professional and personal ethics as well as the standard of excellence in achievement.
