IU gears up for fourth annual Summer Technology Workshop for teens

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 5, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The robots are back and ready for another summer showdown at the fourth annual Summer Technology Workshop for teens. Indiana high school students with an interest in computer technology, programming, or networking can once again work side-by-side with IU technology professionals to build a robot and compete against other teams during this hands-on workshop sponsored by Indiana University's Pervasive Technology Institute.

The workshop will introduce teens to the fields of high-speed network research, cybersecurity, and basic computer programming. As students work in small teams to build a robot with kits from the LEGO® Mindstorms® series, they will learn how those concepts can be applied to the robot for legitimate and malicious purposes. Workshop leaders, who are network security researchers from the Advanced Network Management Lab (ANML) of the PTI Center for Cybersecurity Research, will also discuss how professionals identify, stop, and prevent such malicious activities.

"Our workshops allow young people to play with the technology and have a great time," said Gregory Travis, assistant director of the ANML. "But we also show how these same skills can be very directly applied to a future career. The goal is to build confidence and empower teens to further explore technology and computer programming on their own. Many of us who work in technology careers started in much the same way—by playing with technology that we enjoy."

To accommodate growing demand, the workshop will be offered on Tuesday, June 15 and again on Thursday, June 17. Both sessions take place from 9:30am to 3:30pm at the IU Innovation Center at 2719 E. 10th Street, Bloomington, Indiana. Registration is open to all Indiana high school students. There is no cost for registration, but space is limited to twenty students for each workshop. Lunch will be provided.

To register for the workshop, please call or email the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research at cacr@indiana.edu or 812-855-4458.
