IU Alumni Association elects new officers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Michael Barlow of Chicago will take office as chairman of the Indiana University Alumni Association on July 1.
Joining Barlow as the 2010-11 officers of the IUAA are Chairman-elect Christopher L. Craft of South Bend, Ind.; Vice Chairwoman Nancy L. Hamblin of Munster, Ind.; Secretary Patrick J. O'Connor of Indianapolis and Treasurer Barbara A. Popp of New Albany, Ind.
Joining the officers on the IUAA Board of Managers are Donna Berry Spears of Richmond, Ind., who will become immediate past-chairwoman on July 1, and J Thomas Forbes, who becomes executive director of the IUAA on June 1. The board provides general management and supervision of the affairs of the IUAA.
The officers serve one-year terms, and the secretary and treasurer may serve up to five consecutive terms. Advising the Board of Managers is an 84-member Executive Council. Ten at-large members also were elected in April.
Michael Barlow
Barlow, a professional artist and arts educator, received his bachelor's degree in fine arts from IU in 1985. He teaches visual arts programs for inner-city at-risk youth at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College Chicago and the Marwen Art Foundation.
During the summer, Barlow conducts professional-development workshops for teachers with the Chicago Public School system as well as national Advanced Placement summer institutes for high-school teachers. He maintains an art studio practice and business -- Barlow Fine Arts Studio -- and his works have been exhibited nationally. Barlow is a former member at large on the IUAA Executive Council. He and his wife, Gwendolyn May-Barlow, live in Chicago.
Christopher L. Craft
Craft is senior vice president and commercial banking regional manager for Lake City Bank, where he leads the team serving the Elkhart and South Bend, Ind.-area business markets. He received his bachelor's degree in business from IU in 1989. He is the immediate past president of the IU South Bend Alumni Association and past chairman of the IUSBAA scholarship program.
He has served on the IUSB Business School Advisory Board, IUSB Chancellor's Advisory Board and the IUAA Executive Council. He is an IUAA life member as well as a member of the IUAA 1854 Society, IUSB Titan 250 and the IU Varsity Club. Craft and his wife, Kelly, live in South Bend and have three children -- Collin, Michael and Katherine.
Nancy L. Hamblin
Hamblin, a reading specialist for the School Town of Munster public school system, received a bachelor's degree in 1978 and a master's degree in 1982, both in education and both from IU. She currently serves as a chapter network representative on the IUAA Executive Council as well as a scholarship coordinator and board member for the Lakeshore Region Chapter of the IUAA.
Previously, Hamblin served as an at-large member of IUAA's Executive Council and as an alumni student recruiter. A life member of the IUAA, she began her career with the Alumni Association as president of the Student Alumni Council and as program director at Camp Brosius. Hamblin lives in Munster, Ind., with her husband, Jim, BA'77, DDS'81. They are the parents of two IU graduates, Lauren, BA'06, and James, MD'09.
Patrick J. O'Connor
O'Connor, executive vice president at City Securities Corp. in Indianapolis, received a bachelor's degree in business from IU in 1974. From 1975 to 1988, he served as board member, vice president and president of the IUAA's Indianapolis Men's Club. A letter winner, O'Connor held leadership roles in the I-Men's Association for the IUAA and served as the first president of the I Association.
He is a past member of the IUAA's Executive Council and the Varsity Club Board of Directors. O'Connor received the Clevenger Award in 1999 and the IUAA President's Award in 2009. He and his wife, Cynthia (Garrett), BS'76, have four children and reside in Indianapolis.
Barbara A. Popp
Popp, chief executive officer and principal broker for Schuler Bauer Real Estate Services -- the largest real estate firm in Southern Indiana -- received a bachelor's degree in business from IU in 1976. She also serves as a director on the Federal Reserve Board of St. Louis, Louisville branch.
Popp previously served as president of the IU Southeast Alumni Association and on the IUAA Executive Council. A life member of the IUAA, Popp received the IUAA President's Award in 1994 and the IU Southeast Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008. She lives in New Albany, Ind., with her two children, Kristin and Kendall Kemp. Kristin is a student at IU Southeast.
