BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education Sonya Stephens has announced the recipients of this year's OVPUE faculty grant and fellowship competitions. Individual awards focus on specific instructional innovations, from active-learning strategies to service-learning to writing.

Five separate competitions have resulted in awards to 22 faculty members. Learn more about the individual faculty projects at https://teaching.iub.edu/index.php.

Active Learning Grants
Campus Instructional Consulting offers active learning instructional development grants that will support courses in the 2010-2011 academic year. Each grant is awarded for the revision of an existing course or the creation of a new course that engages students more actively in learning. This year's grant recipients are: Luise P. McCarty, Educational Leadership and Policy Studies; Catherine M. Sherwood-Laughlin, Applied Health Sciences in the School of HPER; Gerry A. Hays, Kelley School of Business; and Estela Vieira, Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Research Grants
As a part of the Scholarship on Teaching and Learning (SOTL) program at Indiana University, SOTL Research Grants support new or ongoing studies into issues of teaching and learning. The grants assist faculty efforts to improve and better understand teaching and learning through their own in-depth, contextualized, and evidence-based study. This year's recipients of the two SOTL research grants are: Selene Carter (Contemporary Dance, School of HPER), Rowland Ricketts (Textiles), and Amy Burrell (Textiles); and Katie Grove (Kinesiology, School of HPER) and Joanne Klossner (Kinesiology, School of HPER).

Service-Learning Faculty Fellows
The Office of Service-Learning Faculty Fellows are part of a learning community that explores issues related to service-learning and community-based research. They also serve as resources for other instructors considering adoption of a service-learning pedagogy or development of a community-based research design. The OSL Faculty Fellows for the 2010-11 academic year are: Yara Cluver, Collins LLC; Hans Ibold, School of Journalism; Anne Leftwich, School of Education; Todd Peabody, School of Optometry; Marla Sandys, Criminal Justice; and Darrell Ann Stone, School of Social Work.

Summer Instructional Development Fellowships
The Summer Instructional Development Fellowships award program supports faculty members' efforts to improve teaching by encouraging new and/or improved approaches to instruction. Individual awards focus on development of new, pace-setting courses, extensive innovation in the organization and style of existing courses, or the development of new modes of instruction. This year's summer fellowships have been awarded to: Bruce Burgun, Theatre and Drama; Margaretha Kramer-Hajos, Classical Studies; and April Sievert, Anthropology.

Writing-Teaching Grants
The Campus Writing Program offers Summer Writing-Teaching Grants dedicated to helping faculty design undergraduate courses that use writing in innovative and fruitful ways. This year's recipients are: Hall Bjornstad, Department of French and Italian; Jeffrey K. Goddin, Kelley School of Business; Luise P.
