BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Office of Community and School Partnerships at Indiana University Bloomington is inviting the public to the free performance of "Soul Travels: Musical Journey's Past and Present" this Friday (June 18) at 1 p.m. in the Ruth N. Halls Theatre, 275 N. Jordan Ave.
The performance will feature students participating in Camp S.O.U.L. 2010, and will include the music of the Gullah Islands, Mahalia Jackson, James Brown, Hank Mobley, Michael Jackson, Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers and Grover Washington Jr.
This year's camp also will feature a string quartet performing the works of Afro-French composer Joseph Boulougne and David Baker, Distinguished Professor in the IU Jacobs School of Music.
Camp S.O.U.L. (Students Obtaining Unique Musical Levels) is a one-week residential program held on the IU Bloomington campus. Camp participants prepare a concert that includes jazz, soul, R&B, gospel and classical music of African American composers as well as traditions.
Participants also experience the IU campus, including a tour of the Jacobs School of Music and the Neal Marshall Black Culture Center. Students rehearse each day with a schedule that includes choreography, music instruction and group rehearsals, along with special guest performers and recreational activities.
Keith McCutchen, an accomplished musical director, jazz musician, composer, pianist and director of the IU African American Choral Ensemble, is the camp's musical director.
