IU School of Continuing Studies announces 2010-11 award recipients

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana University School of Continuing Studies recognized 11 people today (July 15) at an awards luncheon at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis' Greenwood Learning Center.
Awards are given each year in four categories, teaching excellence, service, Dean's Special Recognition and Distinguished Alumni.
IU School of Continuing Studies Distinguished Alumni Award
Karen Clelland, a graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, is the recipient of this year's Distinguished Alumni Award. Clelland earned her Associate of General Studies in 1994 and her Bachelor of General Studies in 2001. She is now a paralegal analyst in the Social Security Administration's Office of Disability, Adjudication, and Review.
Clelland has served on the IPFW Alumni Board for nine years, including three as board president. She was recently elected to the IU Alumni Association's Cream and Crimson executive council as a member-at-large. The Distinguished Alumni Award is given to an alumnus of the school who has distinguished him/herself through outstanding service to the public and/or Indiana University.
Teaching Excellence Award
Michael Abernethy, lecturer of communication studies at IU Southeast, received the Teaching Excellence Award for his development and teaching of the general studies capstone course, his dedication to his students, and his willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty to provide excellent instruction and meaningful assessment to students on the New Albany campus.
Teaching Excellence Award is given to individuals who have provided outstanding teaching service in such areas as campus classroom teaching, instructional development, professional development, noncredit lifelong learning, and other aspects of professional service that support the education of adult learners and others in continuing studies.
Service Awards
Service Awards are given to any individual who serves in a professional or support staff position within the SCS programs across the state, normally in recognition of several years of service and outstanding contributions to the campus program and local academic community. The following people were recognized:
- Kyla Cox, director of communication and outreach, IU Bloomington Continuing Studies, for her excellence in the promotion of continuing studies within the Bloomington community, her involvement with various community development organizations, and improvement of program visibility within Bloomington and beyond.
- Irene Fox, associate director of marketing and communication for the IU School of Continuing Studies, for her tireless work to assist the school in planning and implementing more than 60 SCS promotional events per year, her outstanding success in raising awareness of IU High School, and her determination in staying on top of trends and innovations to help SCS promote its programs professionally, accurately, and effectively.
- Karen L. VanGorder, assistant to the executive director, IPFW Division of Continuing Studies, for her collaborative work conceptualizing and supporting the creation of the Accelerated M.B.A. program with the Division of Continuing Studies and the Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences on the IPFW campus.
- Angela Williams, assistant director of site-based programs for IPFW Division of Continuing Studies, for her collaborative work conceptualizing and supporting the creation of the Accelerated M.B.A. program with the Division of Continuing Studies and the Doermer School of Business and Management Sciences on the IPFW campus.
The Dean's Special Recognition Awards
The Dean's Special Recognition Award is given to individuals who have contributed in some outstanding manner to SCS and/or to the local, state or national advancement of education for adult learners. The following people were recognized:
- Margaret Baechtold, director of Veterans Support Services, for her efforts in fostering connections between the School of Continuing Studies and various officials on and off the IU campus to create opportunities for veterans to continue their education on campus and while deployed. She also is recognized for her willingness to use her expertise to assist schools and veterans in navigating the ins and outs of the GI Bill.
- David A. Maynard, vice president of professional development at Northeast Indiana Project Management Institute, for his expertise in project management, relationship building, and commitment to developing and teaching a variety of project management courses for managers in the Fort Wayne area.
- James E. Hertling, for his many years of service to the School of Continuing Studies. He was the founding director of the Bloomington Division of Continuing Education, developing many of its first programs. Among his contributions are the establishment of the noncredit course program, operated today as the lifelong learning program, the development of the first Mini University (in collaboration with Frank Jones at the IU Alumni Association), the creation of the Returning Student Services unit, and the supervision of the creation of Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County.
- Charlene Willams and Albert Strader, on behalf of Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana's Senior Community Service Employment Program, for their work providing subsidized, service-based training to low-income individuals age 55 or older who are unemployed and have limited employment prospects.
In addition to the awards, 38 scholarship award winners were announced, including 21 adult students in the Bloomington Continuing Studies program. These students received reentry scholarships from a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation.
Two new scholarships also were announced, one providing a monetary award to a student in the Master of Arts in Adult Education program, the other will help fund the continued education of students with an associate degree from Ivy Tech.
