IU professors Chaouli and Wahrman named Remak Distinguished Scholars

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's Institute for Advanced Study has appointed Michel Chaouli and Dror Wahrman to serve as Henry H.H. Remak Distinguished Scholars for 2010-11.
The award was created in 1994 to honor Professor Henry Remak, who served the university with distinction for more than 65 years as a scholar, teacher and administrator. He directed the Institute for Advanced Study from 1988 to 1994 and from 1997 to 1998. The award recognizes Remak's enthusiasm for scholarship in all fields and the mission of the Institute to promote innovative ways of thinking.
Chaouli and Wahrman were chosen to receive the award for their proposal "Master Classes in the Humanities: The Art of Interpretation," the winner of the IAS Remak New Knowledge Seminar competition for 2010-11.
The seminar will be accompanied by a series of four campus lectures by masters of the art of interpretation. Speakers and their dates will be:
- Marina Warner, London University/University of Essex, Oct. 7-8, 2010
- David Wellbery, University of Chicago, Nov. 4-5, 2010
- T.J. Clark, University of California, Berkeley, March 3-4, 2011
- Carlo Ginzburg, UCLA/Pisa, April 14-15, 2011.
Lecture topics, times and locations will be announced separately later.
Chaouli, associate professor of in the Department of Germanic Studies in the College of Arts & Sciences, holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. His books include The Laboratory of Poetry: Chemistry and Poetics in the Work of Friedrich Schlegel (2002).
Wahrman, the Ruth N. Halls Professor in the Department of History in the College of Arts & Sciences, holds a doctorate from Princeton University. His publications include Imagining the Middle Class: The Political Representation of Class in Britain, c. 1780-1840 (1995) and The Making of the Modern Self (2004).
