IU's research vice president announces major new internal funding opportunity
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 29, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Vice President for Research Jorge José announced today (Sept. 29) a major new internal funding opportunity for all Indiana University faculty members.
The Indiana University Collaborative Research Grants (IUCRG) program will award teams of researchers up to $75,000 to support collaborative, innovative projects with a high likelihood of securing external funding. Each project team will include faculty members from different campuses, schools, departments or disciplines.
José hopes that people will "discover colleagues to collaborate with who have similar interests and complementary strengths and expertise" as a result of the program.
"When you look at the different campuses and schools at Indiana University, you find a wealth of people working in areas of inquiry and creativity that overlap and could mutually enhance one another," José noted. "I want to give our faculty members an incentive to work with colleagues they have not worked with before, in part to enhance the research and in part to enhance Indiana University as one of the premier research universities in the United States."
José, who joined Indiana University on August 1, has identified fostering collaboration across campuses, schools and disciplines as one of his top priorities.
"I'm interested in fostering collaboration and partnerships across the university, not just because each year a higher percentage of federal funding is targeted towards collaborative research to solve some of the most important challenges of the 21st century," said José "but also because such collaborations are an important part of the intellectual dialogue that promotes the higher order of excellence for which we at Indiana University strive."
