Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research and WFIU launch Security Matters

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 4, 2010

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With Halloween approaching, you may be on the lookout for vampires and zombies. But the Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) wants to remind everyone that they are much more likely to be haunted by cyber-criminals than by ghosts or ghouls.

To help the public fend off these very real dangers, CACR has teamed up with public radio station WFIU to produce "Security Matters," a series of radio spots alerting listeners to cyber threats and directing them to practical information about how they can protect themselves.

Each radio spot also has a corresponding three to five minute video segment on the Security Matters web site (https://securitymatters.iu.edu), demonstrating simple steps that listeners can take to protect against cyber threats. In a lighthearted, easy-to-understand style, the videos address topics ranging from how to protect your financial information to how to choose a secure password.

In addition to the audio and video segments, the Security Matters web site offers links to additional information and resources related to security.

The twelve episode series kicks off on Monday, October 4, providing a fitting start to October as Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

"As we increasingly depend on information technologies in every aspect of our lives, we become increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats," said CACR Senior Associate Director Kay Connelly.

"But there are straightforward steps anyone can take to make themselves and their families more secure. The goal of Security Matters is to make sure that individuals know what those steps are, and have practical information at hand to complete them."

Security Matters is a partnership between CACR and WFIU, and is made possible by the generous support of Lilly Endowment Inc.

According to Distinguished Professor of Law Fred H. Cate, director of CACR, "Educating the public not only about the vulnerabilities that computers, cell phones, and other digital technologies can present, but also about the simple, practical steps we can take to protect ourselves is a key part of CACR's mission."

"We are deeply grateful for the support of WFIU and the Lilly Endowment, who make it possible for us to reach so many people with these radio spots and videos."
