BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University alumnus Dennis James returns to Bloomington to perform his annual Halloween organ performance, this year accompanying Roland West's 1926 film The Bat Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m.

Audience members who arrive by 7:05 p.m. will be eligible to compete in the B97-sponsored costume contest, with awards for Scariest, Most Creative and Best Overall costumes.

This year, James will perform a new solo organ piece to accompany The Bat, the story of a caped criminal who witnesses a bank robbery and tries to track down the stolen money at an old mansion. While everyone else looks for the money, "the bat" murders everyone in the mansion one by one. This film is most famously known for originating the "Batman" signal later used in the Batman comic books and subsequent films.

James is an in-demand solo performer and research fellow with the University of South Carolina who has been a major part of the revival of silent films and live music. James attended Indiana University in the 1960s as a student in the Jacobs School of Music and began his annual Halloween organ performance four years ago.

"It's always great to have Dennis James return to the Auditorium," said Doug Booher, director of IU Auditorium. "His performance is an annual Halloween treat that we look forward to."
