IU releases 2004-05 enrollment figures
NOTE: Enrollment and credit-hour figures for the Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne campus are recorded and reported by Purdue University.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University enrollment for fall 2004-05 showed a slight overall decline after last year's record levels for total number of students and total number of credit hours.
Enrollment figures released today (Sept. 8) show 98,545 students enrolled in 1,115,163.5 credit hours at IU's eight campuses. From figures one year ago, that is a 0.6 percent decrease in enrollment and a 0.4 percent decrease in credit hours.
"Historically, our enrollment figures have increased over the past 10 years -- especially at IUPUI and on our regional campuses," said Judy Palmer, IU vice president and chief financial officer. "During that period, several new records have been set for Indiana University. The enrollment numbers for this fall represent a small overall decrease for the university, but several campuses continue to record increased growth."
IUPUI showed an increase of 93 students for a total enrollment of 29,953, up from last year's 29,860, a 0.3 percent increase. On that campus, credit hours taken also increased by 3,855.5 to 312,225.5 from last year's 308,370, an increase of 1.3 percent.
IU South Bend showed the largest percentage increase in both enrollment and credit hours taken. Enrollment increased by 221 students to 7,501, a 3 percent increase from last year's 7,280. In credit hours taken, IUSB increased by 2,798 to total 70,519.0 credit hours taken, up 4.1 percent from last year's 67,721.
IU Northwest also showed increases in enrollment and credit hours taken. Enrollment increased by 41 to 5,138 this year, up from last year's 5,097 by 0.8 percent. Credit hours taken were up 1,695 to 49,307 this year, up from last year's 47,612 by 3.6 percent.
Enrollment on the Bloomington campus showed a 2 percent decrease from last year's 38,589 to this year's 37,821. That is a decrease of 768 students. Credit hours taken were 505,115, down from last year's 518,991.5. That is a decrease of 13,876.5 credit hours or 2.7 percent.
"We are down somewhat at Bloomington, and we'll be looking in depth at where and why," said Kenneth R.R. Gros Louis, interim senior vice president for academic affairs and chancellor of the Bloomington campus. "But, it's important to remember that this comes on the heels of an increase of 1,500 students over the past three years. I also should note that our Honors College is larger than it has ever been -- it has increased by about one third. Our quality has not suffered, nor has our diversity, which also appears to be up.
"An initial survey of students who were admitted to the Bloomington campus but went elsewhere suggests that financial aid played a large role in our decrease," Gros Louis continued. "Over the past five years, we have increased financial aid on the Bloomington campus from $15 million to $30 million, and we were a bit ahead of the game. But this year, in some cases, our competitors offered larger financial aid packages."
