IU Southeast's Robin Morgan named director of FACET

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan. 11, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Vice President for University Regional Affairs, Planning and Policy John Applegate today (Jan. 11) announced the appointment of Robin Morgan as the director of the IU Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching (FACET).

Morgan, a professor of psychology at IU Southeast, replaces David Malik who now serves as executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at IU Northwest. Malik had served as FACET director since 2006.

FACET honors outstanding teaching faculty from IU's eight campuses and promotes exemplary teaching and learning practices through retreats and lectures. FACET also publishes the Journal of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, a peer-reviewed journal of articles that promote effective practices in teaching and learning and add to the knowledge base in the study of pedagogy.

A university-wide search committee chaired by Larry Richards, executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at IU East, recommended finalists to Applegate, IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz, and IU Bloomington Provost Karen Hanson.

"We all are grateful for the leadership of David Malik and for his accomplishments in broadening the visibility and impact of FACET within and beyond IU," said Bantz.

"We look forward to building on Robin's experience with FACET and her strong record of supporting teaching and learning," said Applegate.

Hanson added, "FACET is a virtually unique organization at IU. It complements several other campus-based units, as well as the Mack Center, that are devoted to the enhancement of teaching and learning at IU."

Morgan has been a faculty member at IU Southeast since 1988 and was selected as a FACET member in 1993. She has served as chair of the FACET statewide selection committee, the FACET retreat planning committee, and has served on both the statewide and campus FACET steering committees. She has been an editor and reviewer for FACET publications. Morgan has received numerous teaching awards, most recently the P.A. Mack Award (Honorary) for Distinguished Service to Teaching in 2009. She also was the founding director of the Institute for Learning and Teaching Excellence on the IU Southeast campus.

"When I entered FACET, I found a community that supported my growth and development as a teacher and scholar," said Morgan. "With more than 400 members, FACET members represent a wealth of knowledge and experience that I want to harness in promoting excellence in teaching and student learning. FACET offers faculty the opportunity to develop their own skills as a teacher, connect with teaching scholars throughout the IU system, advocate for excellence in pedagogical developments, and take an active role in encouraging excellence in teaching nationally and internationally."

FACET and its program staff work in consultation with the university-wide FACET Steering Committee, a team of campus liaisons, and campus academic officers to enhance excellence in teaching throughout IU. More information about FACET is available at https://www.iupui.edu/~facet/.
