IU Department of Theatre and Drama to unveil newly renovated facilities, announce new summer season

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Department of Theatre and Drama will unveil its newly renovated original home on the west end of the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center this week on Thursday, Jan. 13.

The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a reception in the Virgil I. DeVault foyer of the Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center. Around 6 p.m., attendees will then move to the new Studio Theatre on the second floor for entertainment by Department of Theatre and Drama students and addresses from IU Bloomington Provost Karen Hanson, Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences David Zaret and Chair of the Department of Theatre and Drama Jonathan Michaelsen.
Michaelsen is expected to announce the department's inaugural, on-campus summer theater season, opening in June. The evening will be capped off with a tour of the new facility in the former University Theatre building.
The Lee Norvelle Theatre and Drama Center's newly renovated wing showcases the latest in facilities needed to train theater professionals, with an acting-for-the-camera studio, equipped to show actors their improvement throughout the training process; an acting, voice and speech studio; practice rooms; two fully equipped classrooms (shared with the university); a seminar room; and a conference room.
The highlights of the renovated space are a Movement Studio with a skylight and a new Studio Theatre. Both occupy the stage house of the former University Theatre (now IU Cinema). The Studio Theatre seats about 60 people and will be available to students doing independent projects. The Movement Studio is complete with the equipment and capability to teach dance, theater movement and acrobatics.

Directions from Jordan Avenue parking garage: Take path from the clock along the south side of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center. Take stairs to Theatre and Drama courtyard and enter building where Theatre and Drama Center is etched in the limestone. If entering through the lobby, take the hallway between the Wells-Metz and Ruth N. Halls Theatre. For ADA parking, there a limited number of spaces on the south side of the building (must have IU H permit).
