Founded in 1961 by distinguished composer and musicologist Jacobs Professor Emeritus Juan Orrego-Salas, the Latin American Music Center is the oldest center of its kind in the United States.

Professor Carmen H. Téllez, the group's director since 1992, said the celebrations will open with a concert on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater titled "Bésame Mucho: The Greatest Latin Love Songs of All Time."

Among the special guests performing will be Grammy Award-winner and Jacobs faculty member Sylvia McNair, Professor of Music Carlos Montané and two leading figures in the Bloomington jazz scene: Associate Professor and pianist Luke Gillespie, and Assistant Professor and bassist Jeremy Allen.

The Feb. 13 concert will feature some of the most famous Latin Love songs of all time, such as "Bésame Mucho, Perfidia" (which appeared in the film Casablanca), and "Quizás, quizás" (made famous by Nat King Cole on his album of Latin love songs).

The concert will also include romantic bossa novas by Tom Jobim and famous boleros that include "Noche inovlidable," "Sabor a mi" and "Lagrimas Negras."

El Taller, an ensemble project of the Latin American Popular Music Ensemble, will perform with vocalist Yuriria Rodriguez, trumpeter Bruno Lourensetto, violinist Daniel Stein and the ensemble's Guitar Group.

Tellez, who is also artistic director of Latin American Popular Music Ensemble, and Espen Jensen, the resident music director, say they are delighted to see the return of the ensemble to the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.
