FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan. 28, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the second consecutive year, Indiana University Bloomington spring enrollment has topped the 40,000 mark with a record 40,456 students enrolled for the second semester, according to figures released today by the Office of University Institutional Research and Reporting. The numbers include undergraduate, graduate and professional school students.
"We are pleased with these numbers," said David B. Johnson, vice provost for enrollment management at IU Bloomington in reference to the fall-to-spring student retention rate. "This record spring semester enrollment for IU Bloomington is a reflection of the quality of students enrolling at IU and the quality of faculty instruction engaging the students in the classroom each day."
IU Bloomington enrollment in the fall was 42,464. College enrollment typically drops slightly in the spring semester. Spring and summer enrollment numbers primarily are kept for internal management purposes. However, for consistent representation, universities typically report fall enrollments as the official count for the entire year.
Across all eight IU campuses, official figures showed 102,782 students enrolled, also a record number, up from last year's 101,681 enrollees. Four campuses other than IU Bloomington set spring semester enrollment records -- Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis with 29,197 students, IU East with 2,975 students, IU South Bend with 7,858 students, and IU Southeast with 6,800 students.
Also, six campuses other than IU Bloomington set records for credit hours -- IUPUI, IU Kokomo, IU East, IU Northwest, IU South Bend and IU Southeast.
One year ago, spring numbers at IU Bloomington topped 40,000 for the first time, with 40,211 students enrolled. This year's enrollment represents an increase of 245 students or 0.6 percent. Bloomington students were enrolled in 529,730 credit hours, also a new record.
