BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A quick Internet search of the terms "Islam" and "Muslim" turns up news story headlines about "radical Islam," Islam's war against the First Amendment and honor killings. The stories ask whether Islam is compatible with the West; whether Muslims can ever truly be American. Such framing of Muslims and Islam is not new. In fact, it goes back centuries both in the United States and abroad.

Re-scripting Islam

A conference organized by Indiana University's Voices and Visions Project will dissect this framing as well as highlight what some Muslims are doing to counteract these seemingly hegemonic narratives about their faith and themselves.

"Re-scripting Islam: Muslims and the Media," scheduled for March 23-24 at IU Bloomington, has been designed as a conversation between media professionals and scholars.

Reporters, religion writers and communications students are encouraged to register for the free conference which will feature an international slate of panelists, including bloggers, journalists and academic experts. Topics to be discussed include the media's portrayal of Islam and Muslims, the framing of Muslim women and Muslim use of new media as demonstrated during recent historic events in Egypt.

The conference's keynote address will be given by Andrea Elliott of The New York Times. A Pulitzer Prize winner and creator of the Islam beat at the paper, Elliott will speak about her experience covering "Muslims in a Post-9/11 America."

For more information or to register, go to https://www.indiana.edu/~global/Re-scriptingIslam/. Project coordinator Rosemary Pennington can be reached at 812-855-0353 or rompenni@umail.iu.edu. The registration deadline is March 20.

The Voices and Visions Project is made possible by support from the Social Science Research Council. It is an award-winning consortium of six Title VI National Resource Centers at IU, led by the Center for the Study of Global Change. Its web site, Muslim Voices, features audio podcasts, a video series produced by WTIU-Public Television, a blog, publications from Indiana University Press and curated news and information about all aspects of Islam.
