FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 11, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will present more than 60 events during IU's 27th Annual ArtsWeek (Feb. 17-27), adding to the annual winter festival that showcases the wide range of artistic expression on the IU Bloomington campus and in the Bloomington community.
Among the offerings, several Jacobs performances, lectures and master classes are aligned with this year's ArtsWeek theme of "Arts Teach."
Brass Choir: Sunday, Feb. 20, 2 p.m., Auer Hall
Professor Edmund Cord leads students in the Jacobs School of Music in a virtuosic performance of original works by Ameller, Beadell, DiLorenzo and Hovhaness, and transcriptions of works by Mahler and Prokofiev.
The Bloomington Cantata Project: Sunday, Feb. 20, 3 p.m., St. Thomas Lutheran Church
A collaboration between the Bloomington Early Music Festival, area musicians and the Jacobs School of Music Early Music Institute, this concert will include participation by the IU Children's Choir, an ensemble of the Jacobs School's pre-college program.
Seasons of Sebastian IV: Bach's Epiphany -- All Glory Be to God on High: Sunday, Feb. 20, 5 p.m., First United Church
Janette Fishell, chair of the Jacobs Organ Department, presents the fourth concert in her series "The Seasons of Sebastian: The solo works of Johann Sebastian Bach," a three-year cycle of 21 free, open-to-the-public Bach organ performances that take place at various locations on campus and churches in the Bloomington community. The works are organized into "secular" -- the seasons of Bach's life, performed on the IU campus -- and the "spiritual" seasons of his faith, performed at area churches, with some "cross-pollination" to keep each concert as artistically significant as possible.
Ubuntu! A workshop on African music for teachers & enthusiasts: Sunday, Feb 20, 7 p.m., First Presbyterian Church
The Jacobs School's International Vocal Ensemble and Alain Barker, an expert clinician on African music, along with the First Presbyterian Church of Bloomington, have created a workshop/demonstration on the music of Sub-Saharan Africa. The workshop features a lecture and demonstration of instrumental and vocal music from Mozambique and Uganda with opportunities for participants to gain hands-on learning with African instruments and singing. Instruments (to take home) and materials for the classroom will be provided for local teachers and students. Teachers, students and enthusiasts are invited to sing, play and learn about the music of these wonderful cultures.
Extensions of the Tradition: Sunday, Feb. 20, 7 p.m., Auer Hall
A program of organ works by Black composers Darin Atwater, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Florence Price, David Hurd, Fela Sowanda, J. Roland Braithwaite, Evelyn Simpson-Currenton and Thomas Kerr. Guest performances by organist Leo Davis, the African American Choral Ensemble, Marietta Simpson, Otis Murphy and Jacobs School of Music students. Co-sponsored by the Jacobs School of Music, the African American Arts Institute and the Archives of African American Music and Culture.
University Chorale "The World of the Spirit": Thursday, Feb. 24, 8 p.m., Auer Hall
As part of his doctoral degree requirement, choral conducting student Brian Schkeeper conducts the University Chorale in a performance of Benjamin Britten's "The World of the Spirit." The concert features WFIU's George Walker and Moya Andrews as narrators.
IU Opera Theater: Faust: Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25 and 26, 8 p.m., Musical Arts Center
Enjoy a pre-concert talk about the opera before all performances, starting at 7 p.m.
Based on the classic poem by Goethe, this new production tells the immortal tale of the man who makes the ultimate deal—he agrees to forfeit his soul to the devil in exchange for youth and pleasure. Faust then cuts a broad swath of seduction, murder and madness on his heinous joyride to hell! See https://www.music.indiana.edu/opera for more information on this upcoming production.
Orion Quartet: Sunday, Feb 27, 2 p.m., Auer Hall
The Orion Quartet returns to Bloomington for a free public performance of Schubert's Quartet in G Major and Beethoven's Quartet in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 131. This is an opportunity for fans of chamber music to see a world-class quartet in action.
Back Home Again in Indiana: Sunday, Feb. 27, 3 p.m., Bloomington High School North
Maestro Charles Latshaw and the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra will premiere award-winning Jacobs alumnus Clint Needham's latest work, "Peau Rouge Indiana." The program will also include a performance of Bedrich Smetana's "Ma Vlast." The concert will be presented as a side-by-side event with the Hoosier Youth Philharmonic, conducted by Jane Gouker.
Contemporary Vocal Ensemble: Sunday, Feb. 27, 8 p.m., Buskirk-Chumley Theater
Conducted by Carmen Helena Téllez, the Contemporary Vocal Ensemble brings its free public performance downtown to the historic BCT. Works on the program include Barber's "Dover Beach," Crumb's "Apparition," Xenakis's "Nuits" and Ligeti's "Lux aeterna."
