BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the second year in a row, the Indiana University Office for Women's Affairs will celebrate Women's History Month with an interactive, "Jeopardy"-style quiz event open to all current IU students. This year's Quiz Bowl is scheduled for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, at the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center's Bridgwaters Lounge.

Katrina Reynolds, assistant dean and director of student and staff advocacy at the Office for Women's Affairs, said the inspiration for the event was rooted in the office motto "creating opportunities, empowering our world, facilitating access."

"Everyone has heard the saying 'knowledge is power,' and we in the Office for Women's Affairs want students to be empowered by the great accomplishments of women in history," Reynolds said.

When Office for Women's Affairs staff met last year to discuss the calendar for Women's History Month, the group decided to create a fun event geared toward the student population. The inaugural Quiz Bowl in 2010 was so popular, the office decided to make it an annual event.

"The inspiration was also formed out of the desire to have a fun event in which students interact with each other and learn of the services and programs provided at the Office for Women's Affairs," Reynolds said. "It's also an opportunity to empower students with information on the contributions of women both on campus and around the world."

Mattie White, assistant athletics director for student services, will play the role of host by facilitating the questions to students.

In addition to a True or False category and questions about female leaders and women in politics, questions will be drawn from the following categories:

  • famous quotes by women around the world
  • famous authors
  • corporate leaders (women in the workplace)
  • famous entertainers
  • statistics
  • human rights
  • historical milestones for the advancement of women,
  • women on campus
  • women in sports

In addition to the many individual students who have formed teams with friends, this year's participants include the Independent Council, a social organization for college women who are looking for a social group/outlet outside the Greek community, and the Groups Program, composed of students who are first-generation college students with limited financial resources.

All attendees will be entered into raffle drawings throughout the evening, and the top two teams will receive prizes. First Prize is a meal with Dean of Students Pete Goldsmith. Second Prize is a professional photo of the second-place winning group.

To participate as a part of a three-person team, current IU students should contact Reynolds at katrreyn@indiana.edu with team name and members.

Food and prizes for this year's event are donated by Chipotle, Noodles, Rebecca & Me, Relish and LolaRue.
