Daniels lost her mother to heart disease, which brings this issue close to home.

"Heart disease takes too many precious lives each year," she said. "It's up to us to share the message of healthy eating, exercise and avoiding tobacco with the women we love."

The first lady's presentation will focus on encouraging individuals to better understand the importance of cardiovascular health in order to develop healthy habits that will serve them well for the rest of their lives.

"Heart disease is something that has many contributing factors," said School of HPER Interim Dean Mo R. Torabi. "We are honored to welcome the first lady, and share her passion for discovering ways to improve the health of individuals in our communities."

Heart to Heart is designed to educate young women on the risk factors of heart disease and heart-healthy habits for preventing heart disease. The initiative encourages women to lead by example and share their knowledge by having heart-to-heart conversations with the women in their lives.

As part of the Marian Godeke Miller lectureship series, the lecture is supported by Marian and William Miller. William Miller, a prominent Lafayette physician, is on the Dean's Council at the IU School of Medicine. His wife, Marian, for whom the lecture series is named, is a School of HPER graduate who has been active in numerous civic and educational organizations throughout Indiana and the nation.

The Heart to Heart program is sponsored by the Office of Indiana's First Lady and the Indiana State Department of Health's Office of Women's Health. For more information, visit https://www.in.gov/gov/firstlady/2331.htm.
