Sold-out Mini University to kick off 40th anniversary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 16, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Mini University, a weeklong learning vacation sponsored by the IU Alumni Association and IU Bloomington Continuing Studies, holds its 40th annual program June 19-24.

Attended by more than 540 participants from across the country, Mini University offers nearly 100 courses taught by IU Bloomington's finest faculty. Courses are taught in the Indiana Memorial Union and at special locations, such as the Lilly Library and the IU Cinema. In addition to courses, participants are invited to attend a picnic, a faculty reception, an IU Theatre production and a graduation ceremony at the end of the week.

This year, a number of special events will celebrate Mini University's 40th anniversary. Participants can celebrate with cake and ice cream on Sunday evening, tour Cook Hall on Monday and enjoy a faculty reception and gala featuring a performance by opera singer and IU faculty member Sylvia McNair at the IU Auditorium on Thursday.

Mini U started in 1972 with about 75 "students" experiencing a unique educational vacation program for adults. Participants brought their families, lived for the week in a college dormitory, and attended a variety of lectures and courses while their kids attended a children's program held at Shawnee Bluffs on Lake Monroe.

Today, Mini U draws educators, retirees, and other lifelong learners to the heart of the IU Bloomington campus for what has been ranked by Frommer's Budget Travel as one of the nine best learning vacations in the country. Though this year's program is sold out, organizers maintain a mailing list for those who are interested in future Mini U dates. To be added to the mailing list, call 800-824-3044 or 812-855-6120.
