IU, Oxford host inaugural event on data risk and security
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sept. 21, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research (CACR) and the University of Oxford's Internet Institute (OII) are co-hosting global leaders in the field of information innovation and management as part of the inaugural Oxford Digital Data Dialogue beginning today (Sept. 21).
The one-and-a-half-day, invitation-only event is being held at the University of Oxford in the U.K., where corporate leaders, scholars and journalists are connecting at an exclusive executive roundtable on managing risk and seizing opportunity in the face of a deluge of digital data.
"The goal is to bring together global decision-makers from the private sector as well as the public sector and academia to discuss the emerging challenges of the information economy and to do this in a setting that is conducive to open dialogue and honest debate," said Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, professor of Internet governance and regulation at OII.
"We believe participants will come away with new insights into the emerging challenges players in the information economy are facing and new ties to key colleagues in the private and public sector," he added. "We are aiming for 'a-ha' moments that advance the debate and stimulate innovative solutions to the challenges ahead."
Three half-day sessions will focus on the data-deluge landscape, the trajectory of "big data" as it plays out in the policy and regulatory arena, and the application of data to predict social dynamics, such as recent revolutionary demonstrations in the Middle East. Each session features some of the world's foremost experts in data protection, including private-sector leaders and government officials. Each session is led by "provocateurs" specifically chosen to elicit frank, off-the-record discussions on important issues that are affecting all organizations that collect, store and use data.
"We're looking not just at data we're used to seeing collected -- corporate data, personal data, transactional data -- but also data being generated by the range of sensors in which we're surrounding ourselves," said Fred H. Cate, a distinguished professor at the IU Maurer School of Law and director of CACR. "Participants are going to get a different view of these issues. They won't just see them from a research perspective or a legal perspective, but from a broad and complex perspective to appreciate the full range of issues."
Inaugural participants in the Oxford Digital Data Dialogue include leaders from Microsoft, Google, Verizon, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, the Economist and the Wall Street Journal.
More information about the Oxford Digital Data Dialogue can be found at the event's website. Plans for next year's roundtable will be announced in spring 2012.
The Center for Applied Cybersecurity Research has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in both Information Assurance Education and Research by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. CACR is part of the Pervasive Technology Institute at IU and is affiliated with the university's Maurer School of Law.
