Indiana University Student Foundation presents the Fall Cycling Series

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct. 11, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Organizers of Indiana University's annual Little 500 hope to bring some new excitement to their Fall Cycling Series Oct. 20-22, which will include Cyclo-Cross, a duathlon and street sprints -- all on the Bloomington campus.

"We are taking a new approach to the Fall Cycling Series. In past years, series events have been spaced out over three weekends," said Sarah Schopmeyer, a member of the Indiana University Student Foundation Steering Committee. "We are hoping to increase interest in the fall events, which are very popular among riders who train year-round for Little 500, and we hope that other students and cycling fans also will be excited by all the action."

The three-day cycling event will begin with the Cyclo-Cross competition at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Teams of two riders will maneuver an obstacle course of hay bales, stairs and cinders against the clock and the elements.

The following day (Oct. 21), competitors will run a mile, bike two miles and then run another mile in what organizers are calling a "duathlon." They'll run a road course and ride their bikes again at Armstrong Stadium, where the event will begin at 4 p.m.

"Duathlon is a new event based on a run, ride, run contest. With 2012 marking the 10th running of the Little Fifty, we thought this would be a great way to tie the cycling and running communities together during the fall semester, while adding a new and creative event to the series," said Cooper Miller, another IUSF steering committee member.

Lastly, on Saturday, Oct. 22, cyclists will take their bikes to North Jordan Avenue, between 10th and 17th streets, for 200-meter sprints against each other in a bracket-style, double-elimination competition. The event will begin at 1 p.m.

Winners in each contest will be awarded points that will be used to determine the overall winners of the weekend. Points will be scored for both individual and team awards. In individual participants, for every event that a rider participates in, he or she will be entered into a drawing to win a 2011 Little 500 Bicycle. At the conclusion of the series, the top three men's and women's teams will be awarded the luxury of choosing what time during the day their team qualifies for the 2012 Little 500, instead of the normal lottery drawing.

While participation in the cycling events is limited to IU Bloomington students, the public is invited to come to all events over the three days. All the events for spectators are free.

The Fall Cycling Series is being organized in collaboration with Greek Week and National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) activities at IU Bloomington. Fraternity and sorority members are being encouraged to support their cycling members and will earn points for Greek Week activities. NCAAW is encouraging safe and responsible drinking.

IUSF also presents the annual Little 500 events, which will take place on April 19-21 in 2012. For more information about the Fall Cycling Series and Little 500, go to https://iusf.indiana.edu/.
