IU student publications bring home the gold and two silver crowns from national competition
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's Indiana Daily Student and Arbutus Yearbook each received high honors at the 27th annual Columbia Scholastic Press Association College Media Convention.
The IDS received a Gold Crown Award for its work during the spring 2004 semester and a Silver Crown Award for fall 2003 semester editions. The 2004 Arbutus received a Silver Crown Award. The awards were presented during the convention March 16-20 in New York City.
"Nearly 2,000 publications entered the contest, and for us to win three of the 39 Gold and Silver Crowns is a wonderful achievement," said Dave Adams, student media publisher. "The Gold and Silver Awards are for overall excellence in student media, and we're all very proud that the IDS and Arbutus have contributed to this standard of excellence."
This is the fifth consecutive year the IDS has taken home a Gold Crown. Since 1995, the Arbutus has won a Gold Crown eight times and a Silver Crown twice.
"I couldn't have been more pleased and excited to be awarded the highest honor for college newspapers," said senior Adam Van Osdol, the spring 2004 editor-in-chief and an Indianapolis native. "Every member of last spring's staff should be proud to share in this recognition. The journey and the process are what's important, but the award is still a great reminder of our hard work."
IU alumnus and Indianapolis native Cory Schouten was the editor-in-chief during the fall 2003 semester. The 2004 Arbutus Yearbook was headed by alumna Kathryn Griffin.
Senior Tony Sams, from Centerville, Ind., took home first place in the personality profile division with an article about Randy DeCleene, an IU alumnus and former deputy press secretary to Vice President Dick Chaney. "I'm honored that a national journalism organization would give me such a nice award, especially first place against so many other students," Sams said.
Overall, the IDS and Arbutus placed 21 times in the individual competitions, led by Sams' award.
"After attending events like (the) College Media Advisors conference and seeing how our newspaper compares to others around the country, it re-energizes me to maintain the Indiana Daily Student's high quality," said senior Josh Sanburn, the current editor-in-chief and Linton, Ind., native.
In addition to Adams, Sanburn, Schwartz and Sams, the IDS and Arbutus were represented at the convention by senior Karen Green, weekend editor-in-chief; junior Kathleen Quilligan, features editor; junior Katie O'Keefe, health and science editor; Adam Van Osdol, general assignments editor; senior David Nosko, city and state editor; and junior David Blauvelt, Arbutus issues editor.
