BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The winter season kicks off with Chimes of Christmas, the annual holiday concert featuring the IU Jacobs School of Music's Grammy Award-nominated vocal ensemble the Singing Hoosiers, the IU Wind Ensemble and the Trombone Choir. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 at IU Auditorium.

The Jacobs School of Music's three ensembles performing in Chimes showcase the talent of students and professors throughout Indiana University. The Singing Hoosiers, directed by Michael Schwartzkopf, have performed in multiple states and countries and made appearances with legendary entertainers such as Bob Hope and Tony Bennett. The Wind Ensemble, directed by Stephen W. Pratt, has performed many times at national and international venues, including appearances at the American Bandmasters Association national convention and the Japan Bandmasters Association convention.

The Trombone Choir, this fall led by Blake Schlabach and Jared Rodin, will welcome guests with its traditional prelude serenade, and the Singing Hoosiers and the Wind Ensemble will perform seasonal numbers including classic tunes such as "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," "I Saw Three Ships" and "Bogoroditse Devo (Ave Maria)." The IU Vocal Jazz Ensemble, conducted by profesor Patrice Madura Ward-Steinman, will perform pop song "Baby, It's Cold Outside."

The audience will enjoy dance routines performed by the Varsity Singers as they enhance the presentation of such musical pieces as "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" and "Winter Wonderland of Snow." Other favorites will include "White Christmas," "Deck the Halls" and "The Carol of the Drum." Attendees will also join the Wind Ensemble and the Singing Hoosiers in the traditional Christmas carols and hear the two ensembles combine for "Hallelujah" from Handel's Messiah. Santa's annual appearance will delight children and adults alike.

"Chimes of Christmas sincerely captures the grandeur of the holiday spirit," said Doug Booher, director of IU Auditorium. "This joyous concert with both remarkable musicianship and showmanship warms the audience with feelings of merriment and community."
