Statement from Gates family
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nov. 24, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University has issued the following statement on behalf of Bill and Sharon Gates, parents of IU student Luke Gates. Earlier today, an Egyptian court ordered the release of Luke Gates and two other U.S. college students, who had been detained by authorities in Cairo since Nov. 21.
We are extremely happy with our son's impending release and very much look forward to seeing him when he returns from Egypt. This has been a difficult situation, and while we are disappointed that he will be held a few days longer to complete administrative procedures related to his release, we're confident he will be home soon.
We want to thank the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, especially the Embassy's General Counsel, the American University in Cairo and Indiana University for their work in support of Luke.
While we appreciate the media's interest in Luke's safe return, we ask that all media inquires be referred to Mark Land, associate vice president for University Communications at Indiana University.
Sincerely,
Bill and Sharon Gates
